Project acronym: RuRES
Interreg V-A Hungary-Croatia Co-operation Programme 2014-2020
Start date: September 1st 2017; End date: December 31st 2018
Lead Beneficiary: Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology Osijek
Beneficiaries: Centre for Economic and Regional Studies, Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Kaposvar University.
EU contribution: 192 813.03 EUR
Project summary:
The three key targets of the EU 2020 climate and energy package are: 20% cut in greenhouse gas emissions (compared to 1990), 20% of EU energy from renewable energy sources (RES) and 20% improvement in energy efficiency (EE). In order to achieve these goals, a set of measures and directives has been adopted, such as: the EU Emissions Trading System, setting national goals for reducing emissions, Directive 2009/28/EC for RES usage promotion and Directive 2012/27/EC on EE. Usage of RES and EE measures in a rural area are very important in achieving these targets. RES can be used for both heat and power supply of consumers not connected to the energy grid instead of using fossil fuels. The vision of this project is to perform scientific research and propose RES and EE measures in the function of rural development in the cross-border region. FERIT and MTA KRTK have already successfully implemented the REGPHOSYS project with the objective to find an optimal configuration of the PV system in the cross-border region.
(REGPHOSYS) co-operation between these two institutions has been established through the successfully implemented project. Regional research in the field of PV has been conducted, and substantial knowledge in the field of PV systems in the cross-border area of Croatia and Hungary has been acquired. The proposed project RuRES would continue co-operation between these two institutions in the field of RES and EE measures in the function of rural development in the cross-border area of Croatia and Hungary and involve a new partner - Kaposvar University (Kaposvar UNI). Through the RuRES project, the following expected results of specific objective 3.1 would be achieved: well-established processes for building up or continuing regional institutional co-operation in areas where the need has already been expressed by stakeholders, such as: EE, exploitation of RES; innovative approaches to environmental protection and management.
The project has been implemented in Osijek, Pecs and Kaposvar. Duration of a project was 16 months. Direct target groups are FERIT, MTA KRTK and Kaposvar UNI project teams. Indirect target groups are members of scientific communities in the fields of RES and EE, local authorities responsible for rural development and particularly small agricultural economies in the cross-border region. The LB will be FERIT and Beneficiaries will be MTA KRTK and Kaposvar UNI. The LB will take care of administration tasks. The role of the LB in the project is to develop and propose small energy systems based on RES and EE in rural areas according to regional conditions. The role of the LB is to test the proposed systems in the Laboratory for RES and implement one typical demonstration system in the rural area and to give recommendations of EE measures for rural development. The role of MTA KRTK is to elaborate a model - for Baranya, Somogy and Osijek-Baranja counties, respectively.
The model included the solar, the wind and the biomass potential of eligible settlements. MTA KRTK surveyed the attitude, the socio-cultural circumstances and environmental consciousness of the citizens of rural areas regarding RES and EE. The role of Kaposvar UNI wss to give recommendations for sustainable waste management in rural areas. Kaposvar UNI investigated the potential of biomass for energy purposes on micro-region level, the potential of waste for energy purposes, and analyze the biogas potential on a small scale in the rural area.
The outputs are scientific research results obtained by project teams that are published and documented. Also, the output studied the impact of RES and EE in rural areas on economic, social and environmental indices. Project results can be helpful in fossil fuels consumption and CO2 emissions reduction and in improvement of waste management. Find more in RuRES monography.
Development of FERIT Laboratory for Renewable Energy Sources
A small-scale off-line PV system toghether with battery storage and off-grid and bidierctional inverters for microgrids as well as the HIL simulator for off-grid and Pv based microgrids have been developed within the project,
